Is Competition Bad, Does It Keep People Down, Is It Unfair?

For me anyway, I see competition as the purest form of honesty, and so elementarily sound that it seems only appropriate to have it part of nearly everything in our society. Whether in the future the socialists win over the capitalists, or the meek do inherit the Earth is still to be seen, but ditching competition will be the death nail for humanity I fear, if such a situation does occur. Those who cannot compete tend to hate competition, and want rid of it.

Still, some who are more than able to compete see those who can't or won't in a sense of pity, and thus, want to level the playing field for them. This of course, as anyone who has ever really thought about it, goes against nature itself. Evolutionarily speaking, we are what we are, and have the abilities, dexterity, and brain power all due to competition, without it, we'd have become extinct, every last one of us - that I can assure you, and have no doubt.
The other day, I was discussing such philosophy with an acquaintance, we began to discuss it in past, present, and future terms - history, our modern societies, and the future of a space colony, or off-world human habitats and civilizations. My acquaintance noted that while;
"Competition has created many great things in this world, it is also responsible for many bad things. War has been a great inventor, most of today's technologies started out during the Second World War. I'm not saying competition is bad but I wouldn't want everyone to be competing with each other to such a degree its leads to conflict between space colony members."
This is why I like the concept of sports and space. Because sports will introduce a form of competition, which is friendly, and allowing humans an outlet for their innate characteristics, which I think we both agree we can't change anytime soon without modifying the way the brain works. And if we do that they wouldn't be humans anymore anyway, and in that case we might even be better off starting from scratch with a new species created to live in such an environment in the first place.
It is my contention that adversity and hardship bring people together in survival mode. The hardships may cause unity which will go on for decades, as each colonist relies on each other to do what they do best in the jobs they are responsible for I suppose the trick is to keep it going, as the colonies become more efficient and start creating abundances, and diminish any of the challenges of shortages of their daily needs, wants, or desires. Indeed, please consider all this and think on it.
